Yoidik is one of the 33 Bible-less languages YWAM Ships Kona have chosen to take on for translation of books of the Bible before the end of next year.
Much to our surprise we were asked on Friday night (late) if we would like to sail with the m/v YWAM Liberty to engage the community of Yoidik villages and see if they were keen to have books of the Bible orally translated into their mother tongue.
We jumped at the chance, and packed our backpacks to join the ship yesterday afternoon in Madang port. Being the only visiting couple on board we were amazed to be given the director’s cabin. He and his family are away visiting the USA at the moment and generously gave us access to their private abode aboard.
This morning we left early from Madang town for a morning sail on the Bismarck sea to anchor out off the mainland of Madang province within site of coastal villages in the heart of the Yoidik communities.
We had a delightful morning worship time in the crew lounge with everyone on board—singing the worship song “Oceans” took on new meaning—and then we spent the afternoon in orientation to the ship and then in safety orientation with Jake, the Filipino 3rd Officer. And finally an hour with a team of Community Engagement young people with whom we expect to spend the week reaching out in evangelism and exploring possibilities for language translation projects.
Tonight, we are rolling back and forth on a little bit of swell, which hopefully will make sleep very peaceful for our tired bodies.
