Spiritual "tune up"!

I don’t know if you ever have the same deep-seated feeling of mild terror when you receive that note that you have to put your car through the MOT (Ministry Of Transport test for car safety)? Every time that car test letter appeared through our door, I would immediately be aware of a heightened heart beat! I hated that yearly pre-Christmas visit to the inspection centre. (Now I don’t own a car so I don’t have it anymore). However, to keep unsafe and unreliable cars off the roads and from endangering the lives of other road users, having that enforced test is a necessary pain to endure. A couple of times I would be sent away to get something fixed - always embarrassing and inconvenient to get that fail - but wonderful to finally get that ‘test successful’ document

When the Holy Spirit comes close to run a spiritual check-up on me I actually love it. Even when it is very revealing, inconvenient and embarrassing. It is just plainly freeing to have that ‘test’! Every now and then - every ten days, the great American revivalist, Charles Finney, used to declare it necessary to walk in revival - it is super important we consciously take time apart with the LORD to let Him search our hearts “to see if there be any wicked way in me”. We need that spiritual tune up regularly. Maybe not every ten days. Perhaps more often. At times I feel I need a thorough scrubbing daily!

This past week - our first here in USA - I have been getting that spiritual tune up through a fabulous 12-day series of video devotionals in the book of James with Francis Chan. It has been quite astounding to me - in a book that is familiar to me - how the LORD has used this daily visit into the Bible on the You Version app to really search my heart. I thoroughly recommend it if you would like to take time for a spiritual tune up and be freed of sins and junk that so quickly can “beset us about”!
