Lessons from a Magnifying Glass

“… for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” ~ Psa. cxxxviii 2

As our pastor mentioned this verse yesterday in his sermon, I started meditating on it a little and thought of this:

The magnifying glass can have two purposes.

The first would be to make things bigger. Granny was a voracious reader and in her last couple of decades she used to use one of those big, lightweight magnifying glasses to see the print better.

We really want to make Jesus’ Name and Word bigger in our lives, and through our lives allow people to see Jesus clearer and bigger.

And for the Bible itself, we take that verse or story/passage and focus on it in meditation (see previous posts on meditation), keeping the Word front and centre in our lives. We magnify it above all other words and thoughts in our hearts and minds.

Secondly, you may recall as a child using a magnifying glass to set a blade of grass or hay on fire with the rays of the sun through the magnifying glass? Perhaps you even impressed your charge of young people by starting the fire in summer camp in this way!

But also, as we take the Word (like that magnifying glass to the grass or some dry wood) and let the Son (Truth) shine through it, we can burn up the enemy’s lies in our lives and mind!

It’s amazing how the LORD says He has magnified His Word above all His Name!

His Word is the Sword of the Spirit. Using that magnifying glass (of the Word) to focus the promises of God against the lies and schemes of Satan makes it one powerful weapon! Burn ‘em up!
